What does “Mobile” mean for SongSelect?

by songselect

We have begun our efforts to improve the experience of SongSelect on mobile devices by having a mobile friendly version available to our customers in 2011. The mobile version of SongSelect will be a new website developed in HTML5 that will take advantage of the work we have already done for the API.

What does all the techno-babble really mean you ask?

It means that we will have a mobile friendly version of the SongSelect site. Instead of creating a device specific “app” we are developing a website that will work with most smart phones and tablets.

Why not start with an iPhone or iPad APP?

We have equal love for Apple, Android, Windows Phone 7 and newer Blackberries here on the SongSelect team. We see our current customers using a variety device types and would like to start by making something that works with as many of our customers as possible.

It doesn’t mean we won’t ever make a device specific app…we simply recognize that the mobile device market is still maturing. HTML5 allows us to extend the core functions of SongSelect to the most customers possible while we watch, listen, learn, and adapt to this growing market.

What features will be included on this mobile version?

Version 1 features:

  • New Search
  • Song Data
  • Lyrics
  • Chord Sheets

Great news! This will be a wonderful help. My personal vote would be for iPad and Android first, then iPhone next.

Deryk July 26, 2011 at 4:07 pm

Thanks Sharon! We are excited as well.

Just to clarify … Instead of creating a device specific “app” we are developing a site that will work with most smart phones and tablets. Internally we are actively using it on iPads, iPhones, and Android devices.

I’ll update the post to point that out as well 🙂

Excellent. I’ll be using this a lot as soon as it’s available.

Avery W. Krouse July 26, 2011 at 4:17 pm

Greetings! i absolutely love the resource that SongSelect has proven to be for my ministry. I’ve been using it for years upon years.

One of the things that the splash page for the new mobile version mentioned is searches will put the most relevant results first. This is probably my biggest complaint about SongSelect in that if I search “Your Name” I’m going to get tons of results, and either have to click one by one through the multiple pages or click on a random page and play roulette.

If it was sorted by relevancy (perhaps by recent usage, most popular downloads, CCLI ranking, etc.) I could find songs much quicker. When my worship leader decides to randomly segue into a song we don’t already have, those few seconds could mean the difference between a successful worship moment and a spirit-led train wreck.

Would you consider adding the functionality to sort by relevancy in addition to alphabetical, etc. to the both the regular *and* mobile versions of the site? Thank you again!

Robin July 26, 2011 at 5:46 pm

Agreed with all you shared

Deryk July 27, 2011 at 9:35 am

Thanks Avery!

The new search will be included in the mobile version, and you’ll be happy to hear we are sorting by SongSelect activity so the popular songs will be on the top of the list!

Avery W. Krouse July 27, 2011 at 10:53 am

Fantastic to hear! Just want to clarify, if I visit SongSelect on my Mac at church and I search for something, am I going to get the popular sort option there as well?

Deryk July 27, 2011 at 10:58 am

When released, only the mobile version of the site will have the new search implemented .

The current full site will remain the same at this time, until we make some changes 😉

answer to your next question…

Yes, changes are coming 🙂

Awesome! We’ve been waiting!!!! Thanks for the post!

Shane July 26, 2011 at 7:06 pm

We use Song Select a lot with forScore forth iPad. Very much looking forward to a mobile version.
My suggestion would be to make a full client capable of storing and displaying offline, downloaded content..

Deryk July 27, 2011 at 10:29 pm

Thanks for the suggestion Shane.

Batsirai July 26, 2011 at 8:01 pm

Will certainly enjoy bring this to SongSelect subscribers who use SongSuggest for the iPhone and Desktop. Thanks CCLI!!!

Deryk July 29, 2011 at 9:28 am

You are welcome Batsirai. Have you heard about our API development? That might be something that would benefit SongSuggest.

Tim July 27, 2011 at 7:33 am

Making it easier to import songs into apps like onsong would be a great addition as well 🙂

Deryk July 27, 2011 at 7:48 am

Absolutely, and API makes this possible.

we have started working with several partners, more on that in upcoming weeks.

Melissa July 27, 2011 at 9:35 am

Interested to see the planning app developed. Our team has been using the planning center online and it has been a blessing, but we do alot of going back and fourth between CCLI and there.

Deryk July 29, 2011 at 9:22 am

Our new API will help with this greatly. We are testing with a few partners already and are excited to see that develop and grow!

Judy Okamura July 28, 2011 at 9:51 am

Yeah! It has driven me nuts that I cannot search Song Select on my iPhone to see if you have available a specific song that I have heard.

Deryk July 29, 2011 at 9:26 am

We hear and completely understand as several of us are very much involved in music at our local churches. We are looking forward to having an easy to use search at our fingertips wherever we go 🙂

tony July 30, 2011 at 9:18 pm

When will easy worship support mac computers?

Deryk August 1, 2011 at 6:26 am

Hi Tony,
I’m not sure we can speak into that since Easy worship is a product that is owned by another company. There are several presentation programs that we are contacting in hopes they will join our API partner program and help deliver a well integrated experience for SongSelect customers.

Mark August 3, 2011 at 12:54 pm

Things are looking great. Through an email I was given a link to look at the new mobile site!!!!!! Wow, am I excited to start using it! But I get stuck at the download chord sheet option after I choose the key. But I will say that the search so far looks and works top notch. Good job to all that have been involved with this change in our worship leading. Keep me posted.

Deryk August 7, 2011 at 10:34 pm

Thanks for the kind words Mark. We are really excited about about the new search and looking forward to releasing it for full use (with downloading/emailing working, etc.).

Chris Burke August 6, 2011 at 8:05 pm

Deryk August 7, 2011 at 10:37 pm

Hi Chris,

Mark August 8, 2011 at 12:47 pm

Deryk August 11, 2011 at 3:33 pm

We are working hard to get this ready for the upcoming release.

Mark August 10, 2011 at 9:49 am

It is working today!!!!! Now I just have to get a way to save song sets or get them to import to my on song. Any ideas will help. Good job on the site!!!!

Marvin Jones August 11, 2011 at 7:44 am

Any idea when this will be available? I just read this morning in USA Today, about a new product called iSheetmusic and wondered if you guys would do something like that.

Deryk August 11, 2011 at 3:35 pm

We are in our beta testing now and hope to have it ready soon.

I saw that article also. That type of product could benefit from our API. Hopefully we’ll be able to connect with them.

K August 24, 2011 at 11:02 am

Is it up yet.. I can’t get on the page you have linked

Deryk August 24, 2011 at 11:51 am

mobile.songselect.com is available. I am on my iPhone using it right now! 🙂

Janetta Mandeno May 19, 2014 at 4:26 pm

Hi – Will we get an email when this becomes available and instructions where to find and how to download

Deryk July 22, 2014 at 1:51 pm

No need to download, the website (www.songselect.com) can be accessed on mobile devices now. You can search for songs, get lyrics and chord sheets in the current version.
